Speaking of blending in, the work of Liu Bolin, both conceptually and technically, is something of a marvel. After the Chinese government demolished his neighborhood in Suojiacun village, Bolin used the training he received at the prestigious Sculpture Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in China to articulate his dismay.
His series of work, Hiding in the City, speaks to an individual's attempt to connect, to belong, to literally fit in to society. The invisible man, as he is referred to now, remarks on our desires to simply be heard or, perhaps, to go unnoticed. He illuminates our ability to have both a positive and negative impact on the world around us...as well as the capacity for things to exist independently of our numerous, both large and small, attempts in general.
